Our third offering in the ‘Bargain Basement’ series is a .22LR rimfire Walther PP pistol that was produced in the Zella Mehlis factory in 1938 and is complete with its correct cardboard box.  This is an opportunity to acquire one very affordably. Read on for another LSB journey in firearms history…

When the Carl Walther company introduced the ‘Polizei Pistole’ or ‘PP’ in 1929, its first calibre was 7.65mm Br. This was soon followed by .22LR rimfire, which had a slide that was more slender and lighter that that used on the other calibres.

These .22LR Rimfire PP pistols were initially only sold commercially or exported. However, starting in 1936, this version was also purchased by the ‘Sturmabteilung’ (Storm Troops), or SA, which was one of the earliest paramilitary formations of the NSDAP, or Nazi Party. These pistols were marked on the front grip strap with the name of the SA Gruppe they were issued to, for instance ‘SA der NSDAP Gruppe Südwest’ and, sometimes the pistol number (we shall be featuring one of these rare pistols in the near future).

The Walther PP pistol that we are offering today is a commercial variation. Yet, it is in the serial number range and proximity of the SA-marked pistols. It has matching-numbered components and retains much of its original beautiful high gloss blued finish. It is marked with the ‘crown/N’ Nitro Proof mark on the frame, slide and barrel, and comes complete with its correct 10-round .22LR magazine, which also has the finger extension. The original box shows wear but retains the .22LR label.
