Product Description

This evening we present you with two versions of John Moses Browning’s elegant Modèle 1903 pistol, which was chambered for the 9mm Browning Long cartridge. One is from the batch of 10,000 pieces made by FN for the Swedish military and the other was manufactured under licence by Husqvarna in Sweden. We are also pleased to announce that ammunition for these pistols is now available from our Armoury. Read on for another LSB journey through firearms history…

Following its success with the Modèle 1900, in 1901 FN requested John Moses Browning to prepare a prototype for a new larger pistol. The result was the Modèle de Guerre, or Browning Grand Modèle, which came to be known as the FN Modèle 1903, a larger pistol chambered for the 9×20mmSR Browning Long cartridge. It is no coincidence that the FN pistol shared the same mechanical design as Colt’s Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless (.32ACP) and Model 1903 Pocket Hammer (.38 ACP): Browning had designed all three.

FN’s Modèle 1903 was a reliable, accurate, lightweight, and fast to reload. These factors contributed to it being adopted by several armies and police forces. an issued sidearm for many police forces and militaries. FN manufactured a few samples for Norway and Sweden to consider as military weapons. Norway opted for the Colt M1911 pistol in the form of the Kongsberg M/1912, but Sweden ordered 10,000 pistols (designated m/1907) as standard military sidearms in 1907. Sweden then purchased the manufacturing rights, and the pistol was subsequently produced by Husqvarna. Between 1908 and 1914, the Ottoman Empire ordered 8,000 pistols for police use while the Russian Empire ordered approximately 11,000 pistols with detachable shoulder stock holsters for their various police forces. A further 9,000 pistols were sold commercially before production came to an end in August 1914, when German troops occupied Belgium and seized the FN Herstal factory.

We have an excellent selection of these collectible pistols. Please visit the shop to view them in person. A 2023 Collector Licence A or Target Shooter Licence A is required to purchase these firearms.
